At Heritage House School we have a sensory room and
a sensory theatre available for use by all the pupils. All equipment in the rooms is
interactive in order to promote cause and effect and to enable the pupils to understand
that they can have some control over their environment. These are important skills for
pupils in the early stage of communication development. In addition we have a number of
pupils who have a visual
impairment and our sensory areas provide them with an excellent
learning environment. We may also use the sensory room as a place for pupils who are upset
or feeling distressed to help them to relax and become calm.
In addition we are developing our skills and understanding of working with pupils with a
visual impairment. We have a team of qualified professionals who provide support to pupils
and staff in accessing the curriculum and the environment.
We have developed a sensory garden to provide an additional area where pupils can
experience a range of different sensory stimuli. The garden has a range of plants,
surfaces and resources that provide pupils with the opportunity to explore their
environment through touch, sound, smell and sight.
