Autism

At Heritage House School we follow the TEACCH approach for our pupils
with autism.
Treatment &
Education of
Autistic
& related
Communication impaired
CHildren.
This approach is also referred
as Structured Teaching. We have a highly successful department for children who have
autism and learning difficulties, which uses as its main approach a highly structured,
visual approach to learning. We started this department in 1999 for 6 pupils; eight years
later we accommodate 32 pupils.
Our pupils in the autism department have full access to our Skills for Life curriculum and
Enrichment curriculum and are taught by a team of staff who are highly knowledgeable about
autism. Many of the pupils also have behaviour management programmes to assist them to
learn how to manage their own behaviour in an acceptable way.
The ability to communicate effectively remains a high priority. We use the Picture
Exchange Communication System (
PECS) to assist pupils to develop an
effective communication system. All staff are trained to develop the programme by careful
assessment followed by an individually tailored teaching programme.
