The School's History

April 2008 marks Heritage House School's 40th birthday, a very special anniversary for us. There will be special events to commemorate the occasion during “Celebrations week” starting 31st March 2008. The News and Events section will detail these closer to the time, additionally download more information here.

Reflecting back on our origins...

Some 45 years ago the only teaching for children with a severe learning difficulty living in this area was that provided by Miss G Freeman who had a group twice a week at her own home. Heritage House School was opened on the 1st April 1968 and then belonged to the local authority health department. Three years later on the 1st April 1971 responsibility for these children passed to the Department of Education and Science.

The school celebrated its 21st birthday in 1989 and in those days provided appropriate education including access to the National Curriculum for pupils with severe learning difficulties. In addition teachers visited local primary schools who had children with learning difficulties in their roll to offer support and advice to their staff.
